ElectroMotion ESL X (EM- ESL X ) X features a larger electrostatic transducer and two woofers, with superior power handling capabilities. As the flagship model in the ElectroMotion series, the X sets a new benchmark for price versus performance.
ElectroMotion ESL X features a new, larger XStat™ electrostatic transducer with a 50in 2 larger radiating area than the EM-ESL model. High-excursion 8-inch woofers are housed in an asymmetrical, nonresonant bass reflex (porting) chamber in a surprisingly compact enclosure. Woofers have custom-designed high-rigidity paper cones with extended throw driver assemblies. Component elements within EM-ESL X mimic the design and performance of components used on many of MartinLogan’s most expensive loudspeakers, such as custom-wound transformers, air coils, large steel laminated inductors, polyester electrolytic capacitors, and low DF. Custom 5-way two-wire terminals enable secure connections. The frequency response of the system is 41-22,000 Hz ± 3db. The recommended amplifier power is 20-400 watts per channel. Impedance is rated at 6 ohms (1.6 ohms at 20 kHz); EM-ESL X is compatible with amplifiers with 4, 6 or 8 ohms.
A unique XStat ™ transducer was developed for the ElectroMotion series to reduce the gauge thickness of electrostatic panel steel stators. The reduced indicator does not alter the performance characteristics of the panel. However, as a natural by-product of tighter construction tolerances, it increases the visual transparency of the panel. The XStat panel of EM- ESL X is so visually transparent that it almost vanishes when you are sitting and listening.
CLS ™ XStat Transducer
One of MartinLogan’s original innovations, CLS ™ (Curvilinear Line Source) technology, has been an essential ingredient of every electrostatic speaker we have produced, and the ElectroMotion ESL X is no exception. Proprietary manufacturing methods allow the construction of electrostatic panels as cylindrical sections. Their gentle horizontal curvature solves the problem of achieving good high-frequency dispersion from a large radiating surface without compromising overall sound quality or reliability.
Another key attribute of the ElectroMotion ESL X is its naturally dipolar radiation pattern.
A true dipole, EM- ESL X emits sound with equal intensity from the front and back of the diaphragm, but the outputs are in opposite phase. As a result, sound waves propagating to the sides meet at the edge of the speaker and cancel out. That and the relatively large size of the ElectroMotion ESL X ‘s electrostatic panel means that the output at the sides is very low compared to that of a conventional speaker, which in turn minimizes side-wall reflections that tend to muddy sound details and stereo imaging. While the reduced output at the sides contributes to the surprising clarity for which electrostats are reverberated, the energy reflected from the wall behind the speaker opens up and deepens the sound.
Superb bass integration
To harmoniously merge the audio output from the electrostatic high and mid-frequency panel to the low-frequency dual woofer system, ElectroMotion ESL X is equipped with a patented Vojtko ™ topology filter using custom air core coils and DCR low steel laminated inductors, polyester film capacitors in series and low DF electrolytic capacitors in parallel.
Premium connections, solid adjustable foot
Custom 5-way two-wire terminals enable secure connections. EM- ESL X comes with robust 3/8-16 ETC™ spikes, which can be used to adjust vertical wave launch, improve stability on thick carpets, and create a tighter coupling between speaker and floor to provide tighter grip and detailed bass performance. Each spike is conveniently covered by removable rubber caps if you prefer not to use the spikes.
